“Library for now and future” by Yuxuan Lu

The status of the library as the spiritual core of the university school is always the same, but today, due to the rapid development of Internet technology, electronic books provide students with greater convenience and selectivity, as far as the traditional library is concerned, the rate of reading in the library is constantly declining. Therefore, the future development of university libraries is an issue worthy of consideration. In terms of the library’s function, it is not just a place to provide books, but a place of learning with atmosphere. It needs more functions and ways to redefine the library of the future, as well as smarter visualisation systems to facilitate students to borrow and study in this space.

My research question is how to refine the role of the library through physical space to make it more adaptable to future development. Because every element of the library is important, such as the physical books, which occupy a large part of the library space, and which are always paper books that people can carry with them and can turn to at any time. And study spaces and reading spaces are places where students can be brought into a formal atmosphere of learning. Special collections area are also unique to the library and can help students to gain experience, broaden their horizons and learn about the history of the school or even the city, all of which are very important, so it is something that I would like to look into and think about how to make better use of the physical spaces within the library in the future.

To achieve this goal, in addition to maintaining the original function of the library, it is necessary to add some other functions to attract students and even people in the society to increase the connection with the community. For example, a book trading market could be added where students could exchange second-hand books and share their reading experiences with others. Secondly, a book museum and exhibition area could show the history of each book, allowing students to learn about the development of books. The library can be enriched in different ways so that students can get to know more about the physical books and the space in the library, redefining the role of libraries to enable them to better develop in the future.
