In this podcast, John discusses the civic role of universities and the importance of institutional changes required to co-create knowledge with communities. He introduces the concept of the quadruple helix to articulate the crucial relationship between universities, businesses, government and citizens. John suggests that the civic university movement has a unique role in addressing the challenges of COVID-19 and climate change. He urges to think about "universities not in cities, but part of cities".
About Emeritus Professor John Goddard OBE
John is Emeritus Professor of Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University, UK. He was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for the University’s links with the city and region, in particular, the development of Newcastle as one of the UK’s six Science Cities and the development of a cultural quarter opening out the campus to the city. Before that, he founded and led the University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) from 1977 to 1998.
